VOLUNTEERING FOR VETERANS

There are nearly 2 million veterans in California, and many of them and their families need pro bono legal assistance to get military and other benefits they have earned. Many don't even know about the resources available to members of the military.

Some members of the State Bar have already mobilized efforts to provide pro bono legal help to veterans. Read a California Bar Journal story about their efforts to aid veterans in getting the help they need.

Legal needs of low-income veterans

Veterans need assistance in all areas of law, but most frequently with the following:
  • Consumer law
  • Family law
  • Benefits from the Veterans Administration

The Practising Law Institute(PLI) offers free training to help attorneys represent veterans and their families. You can learn about important laws that pertain to veterans and changes in law that may affect military benefits. The group's workshops include:
