Barbara FriedmanBarbara Friedman is counsel at Hanson Bridgett LLP in San Francisco. Her practice focuses on intellectual property counseling and dispute resolution. Barbara has extensive experience advising clients in the publishing, high-technology, health care, and financial services industries on the adoption and use of domestic and international trademarks and the protection of trademarks and copyrights. She also has extensive experience in domestic and international trademark selection, clearance, and registration, UDRP domain name disputes, due diligence regarding intellectual property rights in corporate transactions, negotiation and drafting of assignments, licenses and related agreements, and the prosecution, defense, and settlement of disputes.

Scott R. CarterScott Carter is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins. His practice involves the representation of biotechnology, medical device and other life science and technology companies in a wide range of intellectual property and technology-based transactions, including licensing, corporate partnering and technology development, as well as providing strategic intellectual property advice. Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, Dr. Carter was the Assistant Director of the Office of Technology Transfer at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Ms. Grabell has spoken on trademark practice at State Bar of California Annual Meetings, the Practising Law Institute and before various bar associations. Her publications include "Comments on the Trademark Dilution Revision Act of 2006" in the PLI Coursebook on TTAB Practice, February 2007; "A Flawed Balancing Act: Rights of Free Speech and Publicity," World Trademark Law Report, March 17, 2004; and "New Northern Neighbor? Mattew A. NecoMatthew A. Neco was most recently Vice President and General Counsel for Los Angeles based Stirling Bridge, Inc., and GC for its subsidiaries, including StreamCast Networks, Inc., the developer and distributor of Morpheus® - the content agnostic decentralized public peer-to-peer file search and sharing software application, until they recently filed Chapter 7 cases. He accompanied one of the seminal copyright vs. technology cases in the current high-tech internet era, the MGM / Grokster case, to the Supreme Court of the United States, and back before the District Court.

Matt has worked for several entertainment, media and technology entities, including a music preference matching related internet company he co-founded (having nothing to do with P2P file sharing), which crashed and burned when the Web1.0 dot.com bubble burst. For almost all of the 90’s Matt operated a law and mediation office in West Los Angeles. He has focused on various aspects of the entertainment industry in Film & TV (representing mostly nascent writers, actors, independent producers), the music industry (artists, songwriters, producers, and independent labels and publishers), and the internet, multi-media and new media, as well as litigation and reorganizations, work-outs, and asset acquisitions in the Bankruptcy Courts. He trained at Pepperdine University School of Law's Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution, is a certified mediator, and has been a Court appointed member of the pro bono mediation panel of the U. Thomas Speiss, IIITom Speiss is Of Counsel to Venable LLP. Prior to his position with MSN, Murray worked as general counsel and vice-president of Tropian, Inc., vice-president at HearMe, division counsel at Silicon Graphics Inc., and New Product Manager at Apple Computer Inc. Additionally, Murray served as an adjunct professor at USF, School of Law, teaching the "Technology Contracting" course for eight years.

Robert Dabney EasthamMr. Eastham is a member of the California State Bar and is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He currently serves as intellectual property counsel for Think Tank Photo, Inc. of Santa Rosa, California, and also represents various clients in patent and trademark matters. He received his B.S. with Highest Honors in Physics, Phi Beta Kappa, from the College of William and Mary in 1976. Thereafter from 1977 through 1981, he joined the United States Navy and taught physics and reactor principles to enlisted personnel at the Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. He attended New York University School of Law and received his J.D. in 1984.

Mr. Eastham is a long-standing and active member of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the California State Bar. As a member of the Standing Patent Committee of the IP Section, he was secretary in 2002-2003 and Co-Chairman in 2003-2004. After becoming a member of the Executive Committee in 2004 for a three-year term, he organized the Patent Office Comes to California 2005 and 2007 conference for the IP Section and led the 2006 delegation of the IP Section to Washington, D.C. He is currently an advisor to the Executive Committee and the production editor of New Matter.

Rebecca Edelson is a partner with Steptoe & Johnson LLP in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Edelson’s litigation practice emphasizes intellectual property, including trade secrets, patents, copyrights, trademarks, and unfair competition. She has broad experience in all phases of state and federal litigation, including provisional remedies, pre-trial development, discovery and motion practice, trials, writs, and appeals. She also counsels businesses on protecting their proprietary rights and information outside the litigation context. Ms. Edelson has represented clients in connection with diverse industries, including the financial, medical technology, bio-tech, database, toy, fashion, jewelry, retail, entertainment, and travel and leisure industries.

Ms. Edelson is a co-editor and an author of the treatise, Trade Secret Litigation and Protection in California, published by the State Bar of California in 2005. Ms. Edelson previously served as the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of California and is also a past chair of its Trade Secrets Standing Committee. She is a 2004 recipient of the Century City Chamber of Commerce’s Women of Achievement award in the area of law. She has lectured on trade secret protection and First Amendment law, as well as litigation strategies and techniques. She has published articles on trade secret law, copyright law, and the use of blackmail in business. Ms. Edelson graduated from UCLA Law School in 1990.

TJ SinghTJ Singh is a registered patent attorney who provides strategic Intellectual Property counseling involving complex issues regarding patents, copyrights, trade secrets, trademarks, etc. Mr. Singh performs strategic patent prosecution in the Hi-Tech arena, including software, Internet, hardware, semiconductor processing, business methods, medical devices and complex electrical-mechanical systems. Mr. Singh also provides patent litigation support, non-infringement and validity opinions, and IP related due diligence support in complex business transactions including mergers and acquisitions. Furthermore, Mr. Singh drafts and negotiates technology related licenses and agreements including software licensing, distribution, development, technology transfers, R&D, and Internet related agreements, involving complex technical and legal issues.

Mr. Singh is a member of the California State Bar IP Section's Executive Committee; Board of Director of the Orange County Patent Law Association; and former Chairman of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Orange County Bar Association. Mr. Singh is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Intellectual Property Owners Association; and International Trademark Association.

Prior to attending law school, for more than nine years, Mr. Singh worked in various technical and management positions as a Senior Engineer/Team Leader/Program Manager at blue-chip Fortune 500 companies.

D. Benjamin BorsonDr. Borson is primary Intellectual Property Counsel for numerous start-up, small, and mid-sized companies in the chemistry, life sciences and advanced materials industries both for United States and foreign countries. He provides legal, scientific, business and technical advice to help companies build and exploit business relationships and intellectual assets through developing IP and technology strategies, drafting and prosecution of patents and trademarks, preparation of legal opinions and licensing. Current and past clients include those in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, advanced material, superconductor, medical device, instrumentation and semiconductor industries.

He has been an active member of the State Bar, lecturing and writing about IP issues that affect California Attorneys. Many of his articles have appeared in New Matter. He is a past member of the Executive Committee of the Intellectual Property Section, past Co-Chair of the Council of State Bar Sections, a past member of the Board of Governor’s Task Force on Sections. Dr. Borson has chaired and been involved with special commissions of the IP Section to comment on USPTO Proposed Rules of Practice. These include Rules on Professional Responsibility, Continuations, Claims and Information Disclosure Statements. Dr. Borson helped implement the new State Bar Procedures for Sections filing Amicus Curiae briefs. He is an active member of the Patent Standing Committee and the current Chair of the newly formed Legislation Committee of the Intellectual Property Section, where he is involved in coordinating IP Section input into the State Legislature.

Dr. Borson has presented numerous lectures at State Bar meetings on Ethics and Intellectual Property, International Intellectual Property Protection, Protecting Discovery Inventions and more recently, on Nuts and Bolts of IP Practice. He also initiated the IP Section’s Patent Office Comes to California, has organized those Conferences and has been a member of the IP Section Delegation to Washington D.C.
