California crime victims to receive federal aid Monday, August 22, 2016 Categories: News Releases Contact: Laura Ernde 415-538-2283 barcomm@calbar.ca.gov SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 22, 2016 – Crime victims in California will benefit from nearly $7 million in new grant funding for legal aid through the federal VOCA Victim Assistance Program, the State Bar of California’s Office of Legal Services announced today. This year, for the first time, California legal aid groups could apply for VOCA funding through the California Office of Emergency Services, said Kelli Evans, senior director of Administration of Justice for the State Bar of California. Previously, the grants were only open to groups that provided services such as emergency shelters, counselors and hotlines. “We applaud the state of California for joining other states that have recognized the critical assistance legal aid provides to crime victims,” Evans said. “This assistance will help restore stability and safety, reduce victimization and help save lives.” As part of its public protection mission, the State Bar supports efforts to expand access to civil legal aid. A total of 17 legal aid nonprofits from across the state will receive $6,952,350 to be used for victim legal assistance, advocacy and outreach. For example, Bay Area Legal Aid of Oakland, the recipient of a $400,000 grant, will be able to provide domestic violence victims with a wide variety of legal assistance including help with their family law, housing and immigration matters. “This allows us to prioritize the person rather than the legal needs,” Bay Area Legal Aid Executive Director Alex R. Gulotta said. “This is a forward-looking funding model, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.” The Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law in Los Angeles also received a $400,000 grant, which will be used to help domestic violence victims with their family law matters and to establish partnerships with crime victim advocates in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office for training and referrals.
