California Supreme Court Appoints New Chair, Vice-Chair of the State Bar

The California Supreme Court today appointed Alan K. Steinbrecher as Chair and Sean M. SeLegue as Vice-Chair of the State Bar Board of Trustees. They will serve one-year terms in these roles.

Steinbrecher has served on the Board of Trustees since 2016 as a Supreme Court appointee. A litigator and partner at Steinbrecher & Span, LLP, he served previously as Board Vice-Chair, co-chair of the Board’s Regulation and Discipline Committee, and chair of the California Attorney Practice Analysis Working Group.

SeLegue, a partner at Arnold & Porter in San Francisco, first joined the Board in 2016 as an elected candidate. Most recently, he co-chaired the Regulation and Discipline Committee; he served previously as chair of the State Bar’s Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct.

With the Court’s current appointments, the Board has fully transitioned to an all-appointed Board and appointed Board leadership, a reform effort that began in January 2018.

In the last few years, the State Bar’s Board and staff have achieved much—a refocused mission on public protection, access, and diversity, and the right strategic goals, objectives, and measures to make us accountable for achieving that mission," said Alan Steinbrecher. "We have momentum now, but there’s still much to do, and I look forward to the work ahead.”

The Board and the State Bar will continue to benefit from his steady leadership, deep knowledge, balanced perspective about the importance of our public protection mission, and his continued stewardship of the reforms we have worked so hard to achieve over the last several years,” said Jason P. Lee, outgoing Chair of the Board of Trustees.

The Court also re-appointed Mark Broughton to the Board for a second four-year term. A certified Criminal Law specialist from Fresno, Broughton was first appointed in 2016 by the Supreme Court and has most recently chaired the Audit Committee.

The next meeting of the State Bar's Board of Trustees is September 19–20, 2019, at the State Bar's Los Angeles office. Steinbrecher and SeLegue will be sworn in to their new roles on September 20.
