Highlights from the upcoming State Bar Annual Meeting Monday, September 26, 2016 Categories: News Releases Contact: Laura Ernde 415-538-2283 barcomm@calbar.ca.gov SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26, 2016 – The upcoming State Bar Annual Meeting in San Diego will feature prominent speakers, numerous educational opportunities for attorneys to increase their professional competency and awards ceremonies to recognize the best of the legal profession. The Annual Meeting will be held Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 in San Diego. Highlights include the following. . 111 education programs on a variety of topics, including preventing substance abuse by lawyers and eliminating bias in the legal profession. California’s Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye will administer the oath of office to incoming State Bar President James P. Fox and Board of Trustees members on Oct. 1. California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu will deliver a keynote address, “When to Dissent,” on Oct. 1. Christopher A. Darden, a criminal defense attorney, author and legal commentator who gained fame as a member of the O.J. Simpson prosecution team, will give keynote remarks at a Sept. 30 luncheon. A debate on the use of race as a factor in higher education admissions featuring Ward Connerly and Eva Paterson. The Sept. 30 debate will be moderated by former State Bar President Jeffrey Bleich. Civil rights attorney Constance “Connie” Rice, co-founder of the Advancement Project and a leader in addressing police misconduct, will receive the Bernard E. Witkin Medal, awarded to a member of the legal community who has helped shape the legal landscape through an extraordinary body of work. Outgoing State Bar President David J. Pasternak will recognize three individuals for their public protection efforts on Oct. 1: Court of Appeal Justice Lee Smalley Edmon, who chaired the Commission for the Revision of the Rules of Professional Conduct; State Bar Senior Director Administration of Justice Kelli Evans, for her work on funding legal services for people who can’t afford lawyers; and Edward J. McIntyre, who contributed more than 500 pro bono hours this year as a special deputy trial counsel for the State Bar. The Loren Miller Legal Services Award, the President’s Pro Bono Service Awards and the Jack Berman Award of Achievement will be given at a Sept. 30 reception.
