Legal Tech Task Force Holds First Public Meeting Wednesday, December 5, 2018 Categories: News Releases A State Bar task force studying ways to increase access to justice for all Californians by responsibly harnessing technology holds its first public meeting Wednesday, December 5, 2018, in San Francisco. The State Bar Task Force on Access Through Innovation of Legal Services is charged with identifying possible regulatory changes to enhance the delivery of, and access to, legal services through the use of technology, including artificial intelligence and online legal service delivery models. The task force is chaired by Justice Lee Edmon of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District. “California has earned its reputation for innovation, not only in technology but also in forward-thinking public policy that serves our diverse population. At the same time, access to legal services has become beyond the reach of too many Californians. We intend to be bold, but also balanced, in examining how policy changes that unleash innovation could best broaden access while protecting the public,” Justice Edmon said. The 23-member task force includes a non-attorney majority, designed to help ensure that its recommendations are focused on protecting the interests of the public. (Task Force Roster) During its first meeting, the task force will hear public comment, establish working subcommittees, and hear presentations on the legal services market, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies transforming legal service delivery. (December 5 Meeting Agenda) The group has a little over a year to complete its work. The task force is expected to submit its recommendations to the State Bar Board of Trustees no later than December 31, 2019. Each recommendation is expected to reflect a balance of the dual goals of public protection and increased access to justice. The public meeting is webcast and an online archive will be available.
