State Bar Appoints Michelle Cramton Clerk of the State Bar Court

The State Bar announced the appointment of Michelle Cramton to Clerk of the State Bar Court. Ms. Cramton will oversee and direct the administration of the State Bar Court and will be responsible for case flow, technology, budget, and personnel management.

“I am pleased to promote Ms. Cramton into this role,” said Executive Director Leah T. Wilson. “Her extensive experience with the State Bar Court provides stability for the Court, and her deep knowledge of court administration has been instrumental in helping the Court move forward on several key initiatives, including the implementation of the recently launched case management system.”

Prior to joining the State Bar Court in 2008, Ms. Cramton served in management roles with the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, for 19 years. She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration and a certificate in Judicial Administration from the University of Southern California.

In a related organizational change, Rebecca Rosenberg has been named Court Counsel. Ms. Rosenberg has worked as an attorney at the State Bar Court for 28 years and has served as a judge pro tem as needed for the last four years. She holds a law degree from Loyola Law School.

California is the only state with an independent professional court dedicated to ruling on attorney discipline cases. The State Bar Court hears charges filed by the State Bar’s Office of Chief Trial Counsel against attorneys whose actions allegedly involve misconduct. The State Bar Court has the power to recommend that the California Supreme Court suspend or disbar attorneys found to have committed acts of professional misconduct or to have been convicted of serious crimes. For lesser offenses, the State Bar Court can issue public or private reprovals. The State Bar Court also can temporarily remove lawyers from practice when they are deemed to pose a substantial threat of harm to clients or the public.
