Rules of the State Bar, Title 2 and Title 3, and Rule of Court 9.31 (Minimum Continuing Legal Education)
State Bar Rules Title 2, and Title 3, and Rule of Court 9.31 list the standards for approved Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE). Rule of Court 9.31 authorizes the State Bar to establish and administer an MCLE program, sets the number of required MCLE hours, and as a part of those hours, required hours in legal ethics. MCLE rules applicable to members and providers appear in State Bar Rules Title 2 and Title 3.
The Member Oversight Committee (MOC) recently conducted a series of public hearings to examine all aspects of the MCLE requirements. The proposed rule changes are a result of MOC’s review.
Proposed rule amendments to Title 2 and Title 3 of the Rules of the State Bar would provide clarification of member requirements, expand specialty requirement definitions, and raise provider standards. Proposed changes to Rule of Court 9.31 are for purposes of gathering additional information and comments on Rule 9.31 will be analyzed and staff will develop a detailed proposal for consideration by MOC and the Board.
The agenda item and attachments linked below describe the proposed changes in detail.
