Mark Toney is a public member of the State Bar of California Board of Trustees, appointed by Governor Newsom in 2020. He brings to the Board his decades of experience as a nonprofit executive leader and board member, championing sound governance, public accountability, and the fiduciary responsibilities of boards.
Dr. Toney has served as the Executive Director of The Utility Reform Network since 2008. Prior to that, he served as Executive Director at the Center for Third World Organizing and Executive Director at Direct Action Rights and Equality. Dr. Toney was also a lead organizer for the Workers Association for Guaranteed Employment and a commissioner at the Rhode Island Energy Coordinating Council.
Dr. Toney has served as a board member of the ACLU of Northern California, California Shakespeare Theater, Consumer Federation of California, and the National Whistleblower Center.
Dr. Toney earned his PhD in Sociology from UC Berkeley and BA in Political Science from Brown University. He has been named an Echoing Green Fellow, National Leadership Fellow, and Kellogg National Leadership Fellow.
