Certified Lawyer Referral Services in California are managed by a variety of associations, legal service programs, and other organizations. They operate independently from the State Bar.

You should use only lawyer referral services who have been certified by the State Bar of California because these services are required to meet standards approved by the California Supreme Court. Certified Lawyer Referral Services must show their State Bar certification number or mark in all advertising.

What to expect when you contact a Certified Lawyer Referral Service:

  • Agency staff (or sometimes an automated system) will ask you about your legal needs, such as if you are looking for advice about a divorce, bankruptcy, or a dispute with a business partner. This information will help the Lawyer Referral Service determine if you can resolve your problem without a lawyer, which may be a better solution for you. If you need this type of assistance, the referral service may be able to connect you with the appropriate organization.   
  • If you need a lawyer, the referral service will refer you to a lawyer who handles the type of legal problem you have. You can then arrange a consultation with the lawyer for a reduced or no fee. After the initial consultation, it is up to you whether or not you want to hire the lawyer.

What if the Certified Lawyer Referral Service does not meet your needs?

  • If a Certified Lawyer Referral Service does not provide you with an appropriate referral—for example, you requested a lawyer who speaks Spanish but the lawyer referred to you does not—the service should provide additional referrals.
